With Election Day 2014 just around the corner, the race between Gov. Rick Scott and former Gov. Charlie Crist remains tight, but Crist is gaining an edge.

That’s according to the latest independent Quinnipiac University poll. Republican Scott has a 40 percent share of voters in his corner, while Democrat Crist comes in at 43 percent. Independent Adrian Wyllie has 9 percent of the vote, according to the poll, which was released Thursday.

Pollsters also discovered that the state’s Independents are backing Crist over Scott 47 to 29 percent. Meanwhile, the Independent in the race, Wyllie only has 16 percent.

“Independent voters are often the difference in swing states like Florida, but the size of former Gov. Charlie Crist’s lead among them is truly remarkable,” Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, was quoted in a media release as saying. “Crist, who has always sought to portray himself as a pragmatist rather than an ideologue, seems to have sold that message to independents who historically have favored problem-solvers who are less political.”

The polls open statewide Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 7 a.m.
