ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A Pinellas County Animal Services officer jumped into action Dec. 8 following a serious injury a small dog sustained after a car had hit him, a press release said.

Officer Patrick Houck crawled underneath a St. Petersburg home that night, so he could get the dog emergency care. The dog, a pug mix, appeared frightened as he hid under the house. After a few minutes of coaxing, he captured the animal and brought him out to safety. Houck took him to Blue Pearl for triage and then back to the Pinellas County Animal Services shelter the following morning.

They have named the dog, Petey, and he did not have a microchip. He is scheduled to have a hip surgery as he continues to rest at Animal Services. The organization hopes to find Petey's family. He will also rehabilitate and recover from surgery there.
