Woman Dies After Car Hits Tree And Flips Over In St. Pete: Police

A 58-year-old victim died in a car crash on 66th St. northbound on Tuesday, and the passenger remains in critical condition, police said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 58-year-old woman died Tuesday after her car hit a tree and flipped over near Pasadena Avenue, St. Petersburg Police Department said.

The victim, Claudette Powell, drove a silver Lexus northbound on Pasadena Avenue when she lost control of the vehicle as she tried to merge onto 66th Street northbound, investigators said.

Authorities said the driver hit a guardrail, crossed the median and eventually hit a tree and flipped the car near 5th Avenue North.

The victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital, detectives said.

The only passenger, an 85-year-old woman, is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police have closed northbound lanes of 66th Street North near Pasadena Avenue where a fatal single-car crash occurred before 12 p.m. on Tuesday, St. Petersburg Police Department said.

Authorities said the driver died of her injuries and the passenger has life-threatening injuries.

Both victims are adults, said investigators.
