Former Pinellas County Schools Superintendent Dies

On Monday the Pinellas County School District announced that former Superintendent Gus Sakkis died last week.

Dr. Gus Sakkis, the Pinellas County School District Superintendent from 1972-1981, died last week, according to a school district news release. He was 90. 

Sakkis was Pinellas’ 11th superintendent. During his tenure, the district said Sakkis made the district more accessible and personal to the to the community.

The Student Code of Conduct was first published during his time in office and Pinellas became the first district in the state to require testing of teachers before employment, the release said.
