PINELLAS COUNTY, FL — One person was killed and three injured after a driver slammed into a truck in an active construction zone Monday night on Interstate 275 along the Howard Frankland Bridge, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

A 37-year-old Georgia man driving a Chevrolet Silverado was heading south on I-275 around 10 p.m. when he failed to yield to construction workers at milepost 34.

He drove into the work zone in a closed lane and hit a Ford F550, which was driven by a 45-year-old Tampa man, who was with the company Archer Western-Traylor Brothers JV and working in the construction zone, FHP said.

Debris from the crash hit a third truck, a Nissan Titan, driven by an 18-year-old Largo man who was also heading south on I-275.

The Georgia man died at the scene of the crash, FHP said.

The Tampa man and two other construction workers in the Ford F550 were brought to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Largo man was uninjured in the crash.
