Bicyclist Dies From Hit-And-Run, Driver Caught: Police

A 49-year-old bicyclist died of his injuries after he smashed into the side of an SUV when he ran a red light, said police.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL —A 49-year-old man died of his injuries on Thursday after he ran his bicycle into the side of an SUV Wednesday on 22nd Avenue South in St. Petersburg, police said.

Authorities arrested the driver Donald Davis, 60, on Thursday for leaving the scene of the crash, detectives said.

Davis has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving with a suspended license, St. Petersburg police said.

The victim, Earnest Jenkins, rode his bicycle through the red light at the intersection of 22nd Avenue South and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South at 9:46 a.m. on Wednesday, authorities said.

Officers said the suspect, Davis, had a green light when the victim crashed his bicycle into the side of Davis' SUV at the intersection.

Jenkins died at a local hospital, officials said.

The intersection of 22nd Avenue South and Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Street South in St. Petersburg is completely closed due to a hit-and-run investigation that involved a cyclist, St. Pete police said.

The crash occurred before 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to St. Pete police.

Authorities said the victim on the bicycle has endured serious injuries.
