Kids, Kubs Win Opening Day Games

THREE QUARTER CENTURY SOFTBALL CLUB OPENS 89TH SEASON

An eighty-nine-year legacy continued Thursday, November 1, when the Three-Quarter Century Softball club held two five-inning games proceeded by opening day ceremonies featuring St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce CEO Chris Steinocher.

Steinocher, an early commitment to join the Club in 2036, launched a high arching strike to Club President Jon Wilkinson and the games began. First game action pitted the Kids, captained by Gerry Wollman, taking on the Kits under the leadership of Frank Sirois.

Wollman’s crew expanded a 2-1 lead to 6-1 with four runs in the third inning on their way to an eventual 8-3 victory. Six Kids had perfect days at the plate. Jim Crook and Larry McCurdy each doubled with McCurdy scoring twice during the game. Jim Scala doubled for the Kits with Pinkowski, Sirois, and Thomas scoring a run each for the Kits.

The second game action resulted in an 11-3 victory by the Kubs, skippered by Will Michales over the Kats headed by Jon Wilkinson. A five-run inning to start the game gave the Kubs a quick 5-1 lead in the 1st inning. Lusty hitting added another five runs in the bottom half of the 4th inning on the way to an eight-run victory.

Ed Broomes and Gus Tijerino each had a perfect day at the plate, including a triple, for the Kubs. Mitch Kanaan and Hal Olver added doubles to the offense along with Lou Kalogeras’s three singles.
