North Shore Elementary Kids Salute George Washington
A special 'visit' by the nation's First President will be part of a celebration on Feb. 22, when a member of the Sons of the American Revolution talks to students at the St. Petersburg school.
ST. PETERSBURG - North Shore Elementary, 200 35th Ave. NE, students plan to take a step back in time as they celebrate George Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22. A historical impersonator from the Sons of the American Revolution will be the guest speaker for an assembly of the kindergarten and first-grade classes at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria.
The students will then proceed to the front hallway of the school for the unveiling of a full-size replica of Rembrandt Peale’s famous “porthole” portrait of George Washington, which was a gift to the school from the Mount Vernon Ladies Association.
The birthday festivities also include a student gathering at the flagpole circle where they will raise a flag that was flown over Mount Vernon. They will sing “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and march to a cadence back to the cafeteria for a special George Washington birthday cake. North Shore students will wear tri-cornered hats that they have made for the occasion.
