Pedestrian Dies Day After Hit-And-Run Crash: St. Petersburg Police

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Nearly a week after a hit-and-run crash in the Grand Central District, a pedestrian struck by an SUV has died from his injuries, according to a St. Petersburg police news release.

John Cowie, 67, was hit by the vehicle, which was traveling west on Central Avenue, Thursday night while crossing in the 2500 block just before 9 p.m. He wasn’t in the crosswalk at the time of the accident, police told Patch.

The victim was brought to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he died Friday morning.

The driver initially fled the scene in his SUV, but he was followed by a witness and later returned to the area, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
