Pedestrians To Follow Traffic Laws Or Be Fined: St. Pete Police

St. Petersburg Police Department said pedestrians, including protesters, will be cited if they do not follow pedestrians laws.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Pedestrians in St. Petersburg must follow traffic laws like using the sidewalk and obeying traffic signals, or receive a fine, said authorities.

For the safety of pedestrians and the community, St. Petersburg officers will be enforcing pedestrian traffic rules, a police news release said.

In light of recent national incidents of vehicles hitting protesters who were blocking roadways, police emphasized the importance of following the law and staying clear of traffic.

St. Pete police said they have received numerous complaints about protesters blocking roads and impeding traffic for emergency response and delaying people driving to work and other obligations.

At first, officers will give out flyers to educate and warn pedestrians, including protesters. Citations will follow later this week with a $62.50 fine.

St. Petersburg Police Department said it will focus on pedestrians violating these laws:

  • Must use sidewalk when possible, Florida Statute 316.130 (3)
  • May not obstruct or hinder traffic, Florida Statute 316.2045 (1)
  • Must obey traffic signals, Florida Statute 316.075 (1) (C) 2b
