St. Pete Police Identify Scooter Operator Killed In Crash

A 30-year-old scooter operator was killed Monday after a car struck the scooter on Melrose Avenue North.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL -- St. Petersburg Police have identified the man killed Monday after a car struck his scooter on Melrose Avenue North.

According to St. Petersburg Police, a Mazda minivan driven by Thomas Alexander, 74, was traveling south on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street at about 10 p.m. while a GMC Yukon driven by Delanard Matthews Jr., 18, was traveling north, preparing to turn onto Melrose Avenue South.

The GMC was towing a scooter with a towing strap. Nathanial Vancleave was riding on the scooter without lights and was not wearing a helmet.

The GMC made a left onto Melrose Avenue South but the scooter was not able to clear the southbound lanes in time and was struck by the Mazda.

Vancleave was thrown from the scooter. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he died.
