Shorecrest Senior Mary Reischmann: 'No Academic Miracle Diet, Just Hard Work'
Shorecrest Prep senior Mary Reischmann says that a love of learning combined with old-fashioned hard work has helped her reach her goals.

ST. PETERSBURG – The secret to success is hard work and little sleep, says Shorecrest senior Mary Reischmann.
Mary may have more insight than most students, if her scholastic record and school achievements are any indication.
She is Captain of the Varsity Swim Team, a muisican and member of several honor societies. Mary spends a lot of time in the community as a volunteer. Her artwork was on display at the 2010 Student Surrealistic Art Exhibit at the Dali Museum and at the 29th Annual Congressional Art Exhibition.

"There is no academic miracle diet," Mary says. "As boring as it sounds, academic success involves a lot of hard work and very little sleep. Also, I just really like learning."

Your inspiration: I am inspired by the prospect of receiving a good college education and finding a career where I can enjoy myself and, hopefully, make a difference in the world, regardless of what I end up pursuing, whether it’s working for an NGO, becoming a college professor, becoming an animator, or something else entirely.
Your secret to success: There is no secret. There is no academic miracle diet. As boring as it sounds, academic success involves a lotof hard work and very little sleep. Also, I just really like learning. I’ve grown up ina family of academic and intellectual people, and intelligence was always a high-valued trait. Plus, I love to read. It’s amazing how often that comes in handy.
Your role model: I’m trying to be my own role model. If I look tosomeone else as something to aspire to, I’ll never think I’m good enough. Some people I admire are Gertrude Bell, Queen Christina of Sweden, Dolores Ibarruri, and Jim Henson.
Post-high school goals: I haven’t decided on a career yet, as I am only seventeen years old, but I have thus far been accepted to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Brandeis University. I will hear from the rest of the schools I have applied to in April and make my decision accordingly.
Awesome quote: “In her heart also there are springing up strange desires. She too is enamoured of heavy winds, and vast panoramas, and green expanses of sea.” –From A Room with a View, by E.M. Forster
