Sons of the American Revolution Saint Petersburg Chapter hold September Meeting via Zoom
SAINT PETERSBURG, FL - The Sons of the American Revolution Saint Petersburg Chapter held a general membership meeting on September 18th at 11:30 am via Zoom. The chapter normally holds meetings every third Saturday of each month at the Saint Petersburg Yacht Club at 11:00 am, except for a Summer break between June to August. However, most recent general membership meetings have been via Zoom due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The chapter is anticipating a return to in person meetings in October. Persons interested in attending future meetings should contact the Chapter for updated information.
The guest speaker was Doctor Matthew Keagle, Curator at the Fort Ticonderoga National Historic Landmark. Keagle gave an overview of the history, military operations and strategic importance of Fort Ticonderoga from the time of the French and Indian War to the Revolutionary War. Keagle mentioned the cannon captured at Fort Ticonderoga that were transported to the Siege of Boston by American forces commanded by Henry Knox. Keagle also noted that the property around the remains of Fort Ticonderoga was purchased by William Ferris Pell in 1820 who desired to restore it, making the area one of the earliest historical preservation locations in the United States.
Fort Ticonderoga today has numerous activities, exhibits and reenactments. Keagle advised that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, potential visitors should check the Fort's website (www.fortticonderoga.org) about which facilities may be open or closed.
