New St. Pete Ice Cream Shop Making a Name For Itself

Coquina Key Creamery is now open in a spot next to Munch's Restaurant in St. Petersburg.

Coquina Key Creamery opened its doors July 17 in St. Petersburg, and business has been booming since then.

Owner Lisa Fernandez began selling ice cream from a truck in 2003 but always wanted a more concrete space for her business.

“I saw the space next to Munch’s and said to myself, 'I’m going to own that someday,' ” Fernandez said.

After checking back for several months, the space at 3922 6th St. S. went up for rent and Fernandez jumped on it. It has since become her dream ice creamery, serving more than 25 flavors of soft serve ice cream, gourmet shaved ice and authentic Chicago hot dogs.

“I wanted some type of food product in here. I had done the Chicago dogs on my truck and they were very successful, so now it’s just a one stop hot dog and ice cream shop,” she said.

Coquina Key Creamery is in a location not populated by other ice cream shops. Except for a Yogurtology at Fourth Street North, Fernandez’s shop is the only one in a few mile radius.

“It was much needed in this area. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms," she said.

Coquina Key Creamery is closed on Mondays, and hours of operations are still being adjusted. For now, the shop is open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.

What To Order If You Go:

  •  Peaches & Cream Shaved Ice with Vanilla Ice cream in the middle
