TBBCA, Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP, and the Museum of Fine Arts co-host Cultural Encounter with artist Shana Moulton

St. Petersburg, FL (June 10, 2016) - On Friday, June 17th at 5:30 p.m., Tampa Bay BCA (“TBBCA”) and Chair’s Circle pARTner Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP (“Shumaker”) together with TBBCA Cultural pARTner the Museum of Fine Arts, (“MFA”) St. Petersburg, will present a Cultural Encounter with acclaimed video/performance artist Shana Moulton, and MFA Curator of Contemporary Art Katherine Pill. This invitation-only event will be held in conjunction with “Shana Moulton: Journeys Out of the Body,” the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Curator Pill invited Ms. Moulton to bring her fantastic and fantastical work to the MFA.

Katherine Pill noted, “Shana Moulton’s work deals with the universal theme of self-improvement. Using her alter ego Cynthia as a protagonist, Moulton combines humor and an earnest desire for self-betterment to explore the world of commercial wellness therapies. Moulton has shown her work and performed around the world, at venues including the Museum of Modern Art and most recently the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. We are thrilled to host her first solo museum exhibition in the United States.”

She added, “Throughout the exhibition, the MFA is featuring all nine installments of Moulton’s ‘Whispering Pines’ series, as well as other videos, sculpture, and an opera/performance piece.”

About Shana Moulton

Born in 1976, Shana Moulton earned her BA in art and anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley and her MFA at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Minnesota, Harvestworks in New York, De Ateliers in Amsterdam, and The Sommerakademie in Berne.

“Whispering Pines,” Moulton’s best-known video series, takes its name from the California mobile home park, chiefly comprised of seniors, where she grew up. With very few children around, she turned to her elderly neighbors for companionship and was fascinated with the knickknacks lining their shelves. Her videos are full of such objects, carefully arranged for the camera, which she views as part of the cast. The artist notes that the serial format of “Whispering Pines” and its production quality are inspired by both soap operas and home movies. “Whispering Pines” will unfold, appropriately, on television sets. A life-size anatomical theater in the central gallery of the Hazel Hough Wing will display the 2008 video “Repetitive Stress Injuries.” Ms. Moulton has also created a site-specific video for this exhibition and is premiering another, “All Angles are Angels.”
