When Kids and Kubs Play The Stars Come Out

COVID-19 has sidelined the Kids and Kubs, planning for 20-21 continues. News of player selection to Hall of Fame brings notice of others.

March 12. 2020 precautions and concerns about the spread of the Covid-19 virus ended the Kids and Kubs intraclub competitive season. Just seven games short of the finish of a tight race for the bragging rights the season was declared over. In April, the Kids and Kubs Softball Club received news of Gerry Mayea’s induction into the Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame Windsor, Ontario, CA., reminds us that the Three-Quarter Century Softball Club has several players who carry the banner as a “Hall of Famer.”

Mayea’s many no-hit pitching performances, the founding father of the Windsor Fastball Umpires Association, and his umpiring skills are evidence of his talent, dedication, and commitment to the sport of fastpitch softball earned for him this Honor. Mayea joined the Kids and Kubs in 2017. His career batting average with the Club is .657.

Ethel Lehmann is a member of the Women’s National Senior Softball Hall of Fame (2008). Ethel joined the Kids and Kubs in 2004. She is Co-founder/player Freedom Spirit Women’s Softball since 1994, She has compiled batting averages of .538, .459, during the past seven years. Ethel is the Club’s oldest Hall Famer born in 1929. Winner of 4 Gold, 4, Silver, 2 Bronze medals, in National Senior Games softball competition. Ethel was the first woman member of the Club, joining in 2004

The 2019-20 season found five Senior Hall of Fame players on the Club roster.

Larry McCurdy joined the Club in 2016 after a stellar career with St Petersburg Half-Century Softball Club. Hitting .882in his “rookie year, he eclipsed the mark set by Edward Stauffer -.835 during the 72-73 season. McCurdy joined the Hall of Fame in 2008. In the field, Larry is a “Gold Glove” performer. A ground ball toward second base or a pop fly toward third base is sure to fall victim to a cannon shot arm and another out at first base.

Darwin Shiflett came on board the Club’s roster in 2020 with twenty-five years as a member of the St. Petersburg Half-Century Softball Club and Hall of Famer since 1997. Darwin, a slick-fielding outfielder and left-handed line-drive hitter, quickly made it known that a runner on first better be alert. Shiflett drilled the ball at a .691 clip during his “rookie’ season.

Hal Olver, Hall of Famer since 2005, joined Kids and Kubs in 2006. Eighty-eight-year-old Olver is just like a Timex Watch. “He just keeps on ticking.” A 26-year veteran of the St Petersburg Half-Century Club and in 23 National Softball championships, He is no stranger to any position on the softball field, including pitcher. From the pitcher’s box, he is very deceptive and will catch you swinging at an outside curve if you are not careful. Hal’s bat has responded with a .546 over the last seven seasons.

In past years other Kids and Kubs players who carried the Hall Of Fame banner included Paul Good, Ray Bosetti, Delphine Boyer, Andy Devine,and Paul Good. Good also served as President of the Club for thirteen years. A testimony not only to his playing skills, but as administrator as well.
