“It is not about winning or losing, but how you played the game.” I heard this old saying many times during my less than spectacular high school athletic career! Through experience, I have learned the essential question is really “…. but WHY do you play the game?”
Many athletic events occur with little regard for who is the winner. A recent example of this was the East-West college all-star game held at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The annual Shriner’s Hospital East-West postseason football game has a long history. WHY this game is played is more important than who wins, however. This event is essentially a fundraiser for the 26 Shrine Burn Hospitals throughout the world. Shriners have promoted this fundraiser game for the past 93 years.
