Search for Deputy's Shooter Continues

A reward is now being offered for information that leads to an arrest.

As the search for a suspect in the early Thursday morning shooting of a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy continues, Crime Stoppers is offering a reward in the case. Information that leads to the identification of the person responsible for shooting Deputy Scott Ranney is worth up to $3,000 at this time.

Ranney was shot in the leg after responding to a call about shots fired in the area of Greystone Road in Thonotosassa around 12:30 a.m. The shooting kicked off an intensive search in the area.

As of late Thursday morning, the sheriff’s office reported it was following up on leads in the case while continuing its investigation.

Ranney, 42, was treated and released from Tampa General Hospital. He has been employed by the sheriff’s office since July 2009. Ranney started his career as a detention deputy and transitioned into patrol in December 2014.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 813-247-8200. Tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-873-TIPS, by going online to www.crimestopperstb.com or texting “CSTB plus your tip” to C-R-I-M-E-S (274637).

Thursday’s shooting comes on the heels of a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer being injured in the line of duty in the Panhandle area after a gunfight erupted on the water. It also follows an incident last week that resulted in a Clearwater Police Department substation being fired upon.
