Girl Fights Off Shark At South FL Beach, Survives Attack: Reports
"I fought a shark and won," a 10-year-old Martin County girl visiting Jupiter Island said after a shark bit her foot, according to reports.
JUPITER ISLAND, FL — A 10-year-old girl survived a shark attack Sunday in Palm Beach County, according to multiple reports.
Jasmine Carney of Palm City felt something sharp grab her foot, causing it to bleed, while visiting Hobe Sound Beach in Jupiter Island with her grandmother and younger brother, according to TC Palm.
Carney told WPTV that after the shark — which “looked pretty big and … was gray” — she kicked it and ran out of the water

“I fought a shark and won,” she added.
Her grandmother saw the blood once the girl was back on the beach and called lifeguards over to help. They applied a tourniquet to her ankle while waiting for first responders to arrive, reports said.

She was flown to Palm Beach Children’s Hospital in West Palm Beach by helicopter for treatment.
Doctors said that though Carney is missing a piece from her foot, she should make a full recovery within one to two months, according to reports.
Locals told WPBF that they weren’t surprised there was a shark attack in Hobe Sound.
“It’s a super sharky beach. I used to shark fish here in high school, and I see them out there all the time when I surf, kitesurf and all that stuff. So, there’s sharks in the water,” one man said. “I mean, they live there. If you go in the water, there are sharks there, there’s not much you can do.
