Living Well at Devonshire
At Devonshire, Lillian and Gene Carter enjoy an active, worry-free lifestyle surrounded by new friends, like Manju and Inder Sethi

People who live in retirement communities are less lonely, more active, and more engaged than before they moved in, according to a June 2025 U.S. News & World Report survey.
That certainly holds true at Devonshire, the Erickson Senior Living community at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., where community members have plenty of opportunities to socialize through clubs, volunteer efforts, creative pursuits, and shared meals.
"Devonshire's worry-free lifestyle gives community members more time to foster connections and focus on what they enjoy most," says Resident Life Director Marty Bores. "These daily interactions--whether attending a fitness class, meeting neighbors for dinner, or relaxing by the pool with friends--create the perfect environment for living well."

The perfect fit
When Gene and Lillian Carter--longtime residents of Palm Beach Gardens--began exploring their senior living options, they were looking for a retirement community nearby that offered an array of amenities and services right on campus.

"Our sons kept saying, 'You have to think about what's next,'" recalls Lillian. "We realized that it made sense to find a community that offered everything we need all in one place."
Boasting a fitness center, outdoor pool, performing arts center, library, bank, salon, cinema, and more, Devonshire left a big impression on the couple. They were also gratified to learn that the monthly service package includes regularly scheduled transportation, housekeeping, and meals at community restaurants.v
"I liked the community right away," says Lillian. "Everything is convenient, and the design makes it easy to get where you want to go. It's beautifully maintained and very welcoming."
A warm welcome
In fact, that welcoming, social atmosphere was the deciding factor for the Carters.
"The moment we walked in, we knew it was the right place," says Gene. "Everyone was so open about their experience and genuinely wanted to share their happiness. We felt confident that Devonshire was where we needed to be."
That warm welcome continued after they moved to the community in May 2025.
"From the moment we arrived, people reached out, invited us to dinner, and helped us settle in," says Lillian. "You just feel part of something bigger here."
"Within a few days, everyone knew our names," says Gene. "That kind of genuine friendliness is rare."
Out and about
The Carters have maintained a busy calendar, participating in a range of activities from cultural lectures to craft workshops.
"We're busier now than we've ever been in our lives!" says Gene.
"We both joined the choir, which was something new for us," says Lillian. "We've never been singers, but we were invited to observe a rehearsal and immediately felt like part of the 'family.' That sense of belonging is what makes Devonshire special."
Gene and Lillian also enjoy attending bingo games, book club meetings, and community entertainment events.
Other ways to connect
Dining is another important aspect of the couple's social life.
"We've met so many people as a result of dining in the restaurants," says Lillian. "The welcome committee invited us to dinner when we first arrived and introduced us to others. From there, it just grew. Now, we dine with friends four or five nights a week."
Gene and Lillian also have access to the world-renowned PGA National Resort, with five championship golf courses, pickleball, croquet, and spa amenities, providing even more opportunities to connect with locals and neighbors.
"I love the golf," says Gene. "PGA membership is another wonderful perk of living here."
'Less stress'
Community members like Gene and Lillian are able to maintain such active lifestyles thanks to Devonshire's worry-free lifestyle. Home maintenance, including appliance repair and replacement, is handled by the expert General Services team.
"It's a huge relief, not worrying about repairs or upkeep," says Lillian. "When those things are taken care of for you, it reduces stress and gives you more time to do what you love."
"Our sons laugh because every time they call, we're busy doing something," says Gene. "They can hear the difference in our voices. They know we're happy and thriving."
Lillian agrees, saying, "Our move opened doors that weren't available to us before. We're meeting new people, enjoying good food, and living with less stress. Life at Devonshire is everything we hoped it would be and more. It truly feels like our move will extend our lives."
