New to romance? A longtime resident of romancelandia? All are welcome to join our new Sweethearts Book Club celebrating diverse romances! The club will highlight diverse love stories by reading LGBTQ+ and/or POC romances in all different sub-genres of romance. Each month on the second Thursday, we will discuss a new theme, ranging from modern rom-coms, to young adult, from historical, to cozy romances for the holidays. Just like our friends over at Millennials Ruin Book Club, you donโ€™t have to read the same book as everyone else - any book from that monthโ€™s sub-genre will do! Feel free to join every meeting or just the meetings that fit your reading preferences. Septemberโ€™s theme is Modern Rom-Coms. Listed below are our suggested reads - use your library card to check one out!

The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai

Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her careerโ€”and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules:

  • Nude pics are by invitation only
  • If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice
  • Protect your heart

Only there aren't any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night... and disappears.

Rhi thought she'd buried her hurt over Samson ghosting her, until he suddenly surfaces months later, still big, still beautifulโ€”and in league with a business rival. He says he won't fumble their second chance, but she's wary. A temporary physical partnership is one thing, but a merger of hearts? Surely thatโ€™s too high a riskโ€ฆ

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veepโ€™s genius granddaughter, theyโ€™re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsidesโ€”namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his motherโ€™s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henryโ€™s Prince Charming veneer, thereโ€™s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?

Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almostโ€”but not quiteโ€”dying, sheโ€™s come up with seven directives to help her โ€œGet a Lifeโ€, and sheโ€™s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous familyโ€™s mansion. The next items?

  • Enjoy a drunken night out.
  • Ride a motorcycle.
  • Go camping.
  • Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
  • Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
  • And... do something bad.

But itโ€™s not easy being bad, even when youโ€™ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.

Redford โ€˜Redโ€™ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. Heโ€™s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloeโ€™s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exteriorโ€ฆ

The Matchmaker's List by Sonya Lalli

Raina Anand may have finally given in to family pressure and agreed to let her grandmother play matchmaker, but that doesn't mean she has to like it--or that she has to play by the rules. Nani always took Raina's side when she tried to push past the traditional expectations of their tight-knit Indian-immigrant community, but now she's ambushing Raina with a list of suitable bachelors. Is it too much to ask for a little space? Besides, what Nani doesn't know won't hurt her...

As Raina's life spirals into a parade of Nani-approved bachelors and disastrous blind dates, she must find a way out of this modern-day arranged-marriage trap without shattering her beloved grandmother's dreams.

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

Maddie and Theo have two things in common:

  1. Alexa is their best friend
  2. They hate each other

After an โ€œOops, we made a mistakeโ€ kiss, neither one can stop thinking about the other. With Alexaโ€™s wedding rapidly approaching, Maddie and Theo both share bridal party responsibilities that require more interaction with each other than theyโ€™re comfortable with. Underneath the sharp barbs they toss at each other is a simmering attraction that wonโ€™t fade. It builds until they find themselves sneaking off together to release some tension when Alexa isnโ€™t looking.

But as with any engagement with a nemesis, there are unspoken rules that must be abided by. First and foremost, donโ€™t fall in love.
