2 GA Small Towns Named Best Nationally

GEORGIA — Two small towns in Georgia have been named among the best in the country, according to a news report.

The travel media company Far and Wide recently ranked the 100 best towns with fewer than 10,000 residents.

The list includes well-known towns across the country — including Harpers Ferry in West Virginia, Rehoboth Beach in Delaware, and Cooperstown in New York — and as well as lesser-known gems such as Monowi, Nebraska. Monowi, with a population of one, has ranked as the No. 1 small town in America.

Here are the towns from Georgia that made the list:

• No. 15, Helen
  • With a population of 540, Helen is the third most visited city in Georgia, according to Far and Wide. The German-themed town is nestled in the north Georgia mountains near the base of the Appalachians. Also known as Little Bavaria, Helen welcomes visitors annually to its Oktoberfest festivities.
• No. 92, Dahlonega
  • A past home to several Cherokee Native American tribes, Dahlonega’s name translates into “gold,” according to Far and Wide. Historically, Dahlonega was the first major location of the Gold Rush nationally. Visitors can go to several wineries, the Dahlonega Gold Museum and the Consolidated Gold Mine. Nearly 7,600 people currently live in Dahlonega.

The Midwest and South regions were home to several of the best small towns in America, according to the report. Towns in Nebraska, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Missouri, Alabama, West Virginia, South Dakota and Kentucky all cracked the top 10.
