23 Killed In Thanksgiving GA Crashes; 350+ Charged With DUI: GSP

Georgia authorities responded to 18 fatal crashes and issued thousands of citations from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

GEORGIA — The Thanksgiving holiday travel period was a busy one for state and local authorities who responded to multiple crashes that killed 23 people while hundreds of people were arrested on DUI charges.

Authorities across Georgia responded to 18 fatal crashes during the holiday travel period, which began at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ended at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, the Georgia State Patrol said Tuesday.

The GSP investigated 12 crashes that killed 17 people while local law-enforcement agencies investigated six crashes that killed six people, the GSP said.

Police departments in Atlanta, Columbus, DeKalb County, Henry County, Rome and South Fulton all reported fatal crashes, the GSP said.

Nearly 250 injuries were reported in more than 560 crashes statewide while 18,000 traffic stops were conducted, the GSP said. More than 350 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, the GSP said.

As for tickets, nearly 800 seatbelt citations, almost 500 distracted citations, more than 11,000 warnings and at least 10,000 other citations were issued in Georgia, the GSP said.
