GA Summer Outlook 2024: La Niñ​a​ Expected To Heat Up Peach State

GEORGIA — With high chances of a forthcoming La Niña, weather officials say summer in Georgia is expected to be warmer than usual.

La Niña happens when a major cooling occurs in the Pacific Ocean's equatorial waters, according to the National Weather Service.

The Weather Channel predicted the weather pattern is expected to shift by late summer, making temperature expectations in August to be more above average than other months.

But before then, Georgians can anticipate slightly above average temperatures in May-July, both the weather service and The Weather Channel forecast.

Georgia has a probability of 40-50 percent to be slightly above normal temperatures.

Furthermore, parts of central and north Georgia could face above normal chances for precipitation while the rest of the state has around a 40 percent chance.

Much of the U.S. is expected to largely be warmer than usual in the summer. In June, New Mexico and Texas could get the brunt of the heat.

Parts of the western U.S. may be near average or slightly warmer, though southern California and Arizona have the most possibility for cooler-than-average temperatures, The Weather Channel said.

Parts of the Desert Southwest into the Northern Plains, Ohio Valley and Northeast could be the hottest in July in the U.S., The Weather Channel said.

This newest forecast is in line with a prediction released last month by the Farmers’ Almanac, which warned Floridians to expect steamy and thundery conditions this summer.

In its summer 2024 weather forecast, the Farmers’ Almanac also said many Americans could experience the hottest temperatures in recorded history this summer. Wet weather is also in the forecast for many parts of the country.

Summer officially starts on Thursday, June 20, with the summer solstice.

Although it’s still early, the Farmers’ Almanac suggests hot, dry weather in Georgia for Father’s Day. For the 4th of July, we should see hazy sun and muggy weather if the forecast holds.

The long-range forecast suggests August will be especially wet across the eastern two-thirds of the country.
