Georgia Flags To Fly At Half-Staff On 9/11

Gov. Brian Kemp ordered flags to fly at half-staff in Georgia Sunday.

ATLANTA, GA — Flags on all state buildings and grounds will fly at half-staff Sunday in observance of Sept. 11, also known as Patriot Day, Gov. Brian Kemp said Friday in an executive order.

A moment of silence will take place across the state at 8:46 a.m. Sunday in remembrance.

This year marks 21 years since the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Passengers on United Airlines flight 93 attempted to gain control of the plane after hijackers took over, but ultimately the plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

"Whereas, on Sept. 11, 2001, our nation was forever marked by tragedy when nearly 3,000 men, women and children were murdered as a result of terrorist acts," Kemp said in the executive order.

"And whereas, on the anniversary of this event, we honor those who perished by reflecting on their lives and to uphold the patriotism and passion that drove their sacrifice."

The Associated Press reported Friday that Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, an al-Qaida leader accused of being involved in the attacks, is still awaiting trial.
