Five Ways to Love your Pet this Valentine's Day

As you're preparing the perfect evening for you and your significant other, don't forget about another loved one of the family: your pet.

There’s something special about the way February makes us feel. It could be the chill weather, all the holidays, or the fact that February is just a few days shorter. And there’s no denying most of us are pretty excited about the quickly approaching Valentine’s Day too. But as you’re preparing the perfect evening for you and your significant other, don’t forget about another loved one of the family: your pet. At Deceased Pet Care, we love our pets, and we want their Valentine’s Day to be as safe and special as yours. Take a quick read of our five ways to love your pet this Valentine’s Day.

A Rose by Any Other Name
If you’re like us, you’ve already ordered a double dozen bouquet of roses for your lover, but be careful your pet doesn’t get into the aromatic bouquet. Any collection of flowers can cause allergic reactions to your special cat or dog… sometimes as severe as seizures, and according to PetMD, lilies among other flowers can be fatal to your cat.

Let’s Get Physical
One of the best ways you can show love to your pet is to take them out for a little physical activity. The winter months can lead to lethargy and weight gain. So as long as it’s not deathly cold outside, take them out for a walk, toss the ball, chase a laser, tug-of-war with an old towel, or if you’re both up for it, there’s not much more refreshing than a winter run.

.... Or Not.
When you’re showing physical affection to your pet, try and avoid things like heavy hugs and neck squeezes. Although this an ultimate sign of affection among humans, it can be seen as aggressive or constricting to your pet. Show love through petting and back scratches not squeezes. They could feel like they’re choking or being attacked (even if they trust you). Keep a special close eye on young visitors, as the neck is the easiest place to go for a quick hug.

Say No to Sweets
Not only will most sweet treats like chocolate cause serious complications among your pet, if you have a treat that contains artificial sweeteners like xylitol, your pet might need to be rushed to the vet. Xylitol is toxic to your pet and can cause nausea, vomiting, shaking, seizures, and even liver failure.

It’s About Time
As much as your pet would love a new chew toy, or a fresh feast -- there is nothing you can give more valuable than your time. Love can be shown through gifts, but it speaks far louder with time and effort. Make sure this Valentine’s Day you spend time showing your pet as much love as they show you (unconditionally) every day.

Valentine’s Day is a special day: it reminds us of love past, present, and future. Make sure you take a little time to show your pet just how much you love them. After all, they’ll treat you like it’s Valentine’s Day 365 days a year.
