100 MPH Speeder Did It For SnapChat: Cops

An Alpharetta officer clocked the driver traveling more than 100 miles an hour on Ga. 400 while trying to take a photo using the app.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Social media use has become so entwined in our routines that some of us don't start the day until we've had a chance to peruse our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram feeds. One motorist driving through Alpharetta this week apparently took social media use down an extremely dangerous path when he attempted to use the app while traveling more than 100 miles an hour.

An officer with the Alpharetta Police Department was operating stationary radar around 10:37 p.m. Tuesday, July 18 on the northbound side of GA-400 at the Mansell Road interchange when he observed a black 2015 Dodge Charger change lanes and accelerate "leaving all other traffic behind," an incident report released by the Department of Public Safety states.

The officer estimated the vehicle was going about 110 miles an hour, but the radar clocked the vehicle traveling at 112 miles an hour on Georgia's Hospitality Highway.

The cop activated his emergency equipment and performed a traffic stop on the driver, later identified as Malon Brook Neal, 24, of Alpharetta. Neal was informed why he was being pulled over and asked if he knew how fast he was going. According to the report, the driver said he knew he was going "over 100 mph."

"He then said he was driving in such a manner because he was attempting to take a picture using the SnapChat application on his phone," the report states.
