$200K+ Raised For GA Family Killed In Texas Crash

The Johnson County crash claimed the lives of a woman, her two children, her parents and a cousin this week.

ALPHARETTA, GA — More than $180,000 has been raised to help cover funeral costs for a family of five from Alpharetta killed in a Texas crash Tuesday.

A woman, her two children, her parents and a cousin were all killed in the Johnson County, Texas, crash around 4 p.m. near Dallas.

They were identified as Naveena Pothabathula, 36; 9-year-old NishiDharaman Pothabathula; 11-year-old Kruthik Srinarayan Pothabathula; Nageswararao Ponnada, 64; and Sitamahalakhmi Ponnada, 60.

Naveena Pothabathula's husband survived the fatal crash and was in critical condition, having to undergo multiple surgeries, per a GoFundMe for the family.

Meanwhile, at least $36,000 has been raised for their 28-year-old cousin, Rushil Barri, who also died in the crash.

"Rushil Barri ... was a primary source for his retired parents in India, and he was also responsible for his brother’s ... education. He made an impact on so many of us in his role as a son, loving brother, a great friend and a fun-loving uncle to all the kids. He had an infectious positivity and an easy-going nature that made him the confident of many. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to any who needed it. He helped guide and mentor many young professionals in his career," read a GoFundMe established for Barri.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. on U.S. Route 67 near County Road 1119, northeast of Nemo in the Dallas area. A 2014 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 17-year-old boy from Glen Rose, Texas, was traveling south when it entered the northbound lane in a no-passing area and hit head-on a 2021 Honda Odyssey that Barri was driving, authorities said in the past.

The driver of the Silverado and his passenger, also a 17-year-old boy from Glen Rose, suffered critical injuries and were transported to receive medical care, authorities said in the past.

Organizers of both GoFundMe accounts said they are working to return the bodies of those who died to India for funeral services.

Atlanta News First reported vigils are planned for 3-7 p.m. Saturday in metro Atlanta and in Houston, Texas. The outlet reported plans are to fly the bodies to India for a funeral planned for Sunday.
