The source we are speaking of, to put it simply, is our heart. However, biblically speaking, this includes our mind, will and emotions. How then can we influence or direct our mind, will, and emotions? Jesus said at the end of Luke 6:45 that “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. “ What thoughts, what plans or decisions, or what emotions, dominate your heart? We all make choices in life. If you want to make good choices with your words, you need to make some other wise choices as well.
Do you fill your mind with the right things? Do you allow the right thoughts to dominate your thinking? Your mind is influenced by what you read, what music you listen to, what you watch on television, who you hang with, and what you talk about. When I say “right,” it can be anything that doesn’t go against God’s Word, which you would have to read to truly know.
Have you made any unwise vows? “I’ll never allow this to happen!” “I’ll never be hurt again!” “ I’ll do this even if it kills me!” The problem here is that we sometimes establish an unhealthy line that blocks people or healthy change out. We protect ourselves to the point of hurting others, which really hurts us as well.

Then there is the problem of emotions. Emotions are so unreliable when we try to control them alone. The Bible gives us the direction to live Spirit-controlled lives. When we submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit, who is in each of us who have received salvation, we can handle our emotions so much better. Submitting to the Holy Spirit and speaking God’s Word over our day, should be done every morning. It sets you out on the right path to maintain control. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. So unlike it sounds, self-control is not something you have to do by yourself. Also, remember that emotions like anger, are not wrong. Even Jesus felt anger. The secret is how you direct your emotions and how you react with your words. Sometimes, anger can help us speak hard truths that need to be spoken. We just have to make sure they are really truths and really need to be spoken!
Allow yourself to pour over these words, and ask God to help you. He can show you where your weaknesses are. He knows your heart and cares more for you than you can imagine. The last part of Proverbs 18:21 I listed above, in one version says, “Those who speak with care will be rewarded.” May that be the motivation we need to get us going in the right direction with our words.
