Adult Acting, Youth Art Classes Open For Registration

ALPHARETTA, GA — The Alpharetta Recreation, Parks and Cultural Services Department is rolling out new classes and workshops for residents of all ages. These new classes will begin this month, and include acting classes, youth art, baking and healthy cooking options.

“With the opening of our Arts Center coming soon, we are excited to expand our artistic and creative enrichment classes to the community,” said Kim Zane, manager of the Cultural Services Division.

The adult acting classes are hosted by ACT1 Theater at the Alpharetta Presbyterian Church, and culminate with an outdoor, public performance at Brooke Street Park. In the young artist category, the city is offering seven new classes which encourage youth as young as two-years old to get creative. These classes include clay work, cartoon drawing and animation, and other opportunities for creative exploration.

The one-day, young baker class, hosted by Cupcakes by D’Signz, will teach children ages 7 and up, how to use fondant, molds and buttercreams to decorate fanciful cupcakes. The four-week Fun With Food series designed for homeschooler by Chef Sue Snape with Leaf and Loaf, LLC., will allow children to discover healthy-eating habits, develop food appreciation, and learn about kitchen safety, nutrition and beauty, while integrating math, science, and art into tasting new foods.

“Residents are asking for additional opportunities to create and connect to arts and culture in Alpharetta, and we are thrilled to offer options for all ages,” said Cultural Arts Supervisor Toby Smallwood.

Adult Acting

• Improv or Improvisation: Dive into physical comedy and improv, where the plot and characters are made up in the moment. Taught by Kit FitzSimons. Meets Mondays 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. April 9 to May 7. Outdoor park performance on May 12 from 7-9 p.m.
• Shakespeare: Explore classical theater, stage combat and how to convey Shakespearean characters. Taught by Chris Jones. Meets Wednesdays 7-9 p.m. May 9 to June 13. Outdoor park performance on June 30 from 7-9 p.m.
• Acting Fundamentals: Build a solid foundation with exposure to basic acting, theater terminology, stage technique and interacting with others. Taught by Carlye McLaughlin. Meets Mondays 7-9 p.m., June 4 to July 9. Outdoor park performance on July 14 from 7-9 p.m.
• Character Development: Understand personal, solo acting and the process of creating a believable stage character. Taught by Shannon Kraiger. Meets Wednesdays 7-9 p.m., July 11 to Aug. 8 and Friday Aug. 10. Outdoor park performance on Aug. 11 from 7-9 p.m.
• Musical Theater: Focus on integrating voice, dance and acting to convey characters. Taught by Regan Kays Phelps. Meets Mondays 7-9 p.m. July 23 to Aug. 27. Outdoor park performance on Sept. 8 from 7-9 p.m.

Youth Art

• Create with Me: Create themed art projects together with a parent. Tuesdays from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Four-week sessions for ages 2-5. Start on April 10 and May 8.
• Mini-Art School: Transform acrylic, fabric, sand, canvas, and other materials into a piece of beautiful art. Thursdays, 4-5 p.m. Six-week session for ages 6-9. Starts April 19.
• Creative Playground: Create a special piece of art each month with parent participation. For ages 3-5, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 19 and again on May 10.
• Creative Claywork: Work with clay to create whimsical projects or decorative pieces. Tuesdays 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eight-week session for ages 6-12. Starts May 15.
• Teen Drawing, Mixed Media, Portfolio Class: Build a body of work to incorporate into a portfolio, using hands-on instruction, demos and diverse media. Mondays, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Six-week session for ages 12 and older. Starts April 23.
• Cartoon Class: Learn to draw exaggerated facial features, illustrate movement or sound effects, and create silly animated characters. Tuesdays, 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eight-week session for ages 6-10. Starts May 8.
• Artz for the Harp: Explore child-friendly instruments and play in ensemble setting. For beginning level musicians ages 6-12. Thursdays, 4-5 p.m. Multi-week session starts May 17.
