Alpharetta American Legion Awards Scholarships

Alpharetta American Legion presented $1,000 to five students for outstanding scholarship, extracurricular activities and community service.

ALPHARETTA, GA — Alpharetta American Legion Post 201 has awarded college scholarships to five deserving area high school graduates.

Continuing its decades long tradition of presenting $1,000 checks to students for outstanding
scholarship, extracurricular activities and community service, the Post is proud to have
recognized the following individuals:

  • Heather Abler, a graduate of Woodstock High School, who will be attending Kennesaw State University in the fall
  • Travis Burns, a graduate of Dunwoody High School who is going The University of South Alabama
  • Faith Wagner, a May graduate of Milton High School will be studying this fall at the Universityof Georgia
  • Kathryn Leonard, a graduate of Blessed Trinity High School will enter her freshman year at the University of Alabama.
  • Liam Kilgore, a South Forsyth High School graduate, will be attending Georgia Southern University

According to Post 201 Scholarship Committee Chairman Tom Billings, “We had an excellent selection of applicants this year. All were outstanding students who are engaged in school activities and committed to their communities. Their schools and their parents can be proud of their selection from among many top candidates.”

Post Commander Pete Esker congratulated the awardees on behalf of the 800 wartime members.

He said that for the first time applicants this year were required to write an essay on the subject “Patriotism and Citizenship – What America Means to Me.” Esker said that the students chosen for the scholarship had a mature understanding of the subject matter and conveyed it in a clear and concise manner.
