🌱 Alpharetta Council Approves Special Needs School + Budget Passed

Here are the top five stories in Alpharetta-Milton today:
- The Alpharetta City Council passed the city's fiscal year 2023 budget on Monday. The fiscal year, which begins on July 1 and runs to June 30 of 2023, has increased by about 2.5% from the previous year. Major priorities for the council included maintaining a competitive tax rate and ensuring economic flexibility in the case of an economic downturn. (Appen Media)
- The Alpharetta City Council recently approved a plan for special needs school on Morris Road. Though approved, the green light for Bright Path Academy came with several conditions, including the requirement that any outdoor recreational area must be limited to the north side of the building. Bright Path Academy is a not-for-profit school for children with special needs that provides educational services for children in grades 6-12. Initial enrollment (for 10 students) will begin in August. (Subscription: The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- Southern Baptist show filmed in Alpharetta will premiere on Georgia's ACTS2 TV next week. The show, named "SBC Coast to Coast," was filmed at the North American Mission Board's studio. It's a 30-minute show depicting "stories of Baptists doing awesome work around all four corners of the USA and Canada," said Jon Graham, the creator of ACTS2. "SBC Coast to Coast," when it premiers, will be the first in-house-produced program for ACTS2. (Biblical Recorder)
- An Alpharetta-based plaintiff lawyer will face a hard battle to preserve $40 million. Bob Cheeley of Cheeley Law Group led a team that secured a $40 million verdict for a business dispute over control of a company that makes food product wrappings. Now he and his firm, which is based in Alpharetta, face a battle to preserve the award because the opposing side's lead counsel says he'll file a motion to set aside the verdict by Friday. - A newly-rebuilt State Election Board will determine if the state of GA should take over Fulton County election operations. Judge William Duffey Jr., appointed Friday by Gov. Brian Kemp, is the new chair of the state board. This appointment comes just before the midterm elections. Chairs of the Democratic and Libertarian parties of Georgia called for a solution after the federal government report confirms that it is possible for the electronic systems to be compromised.
