Alpharetta Updates Truck Route Ordinance

The city added several new roads trucks are allowed to use as part of their routes.

ALPHARETTA, GA — The Alpharetta City Council last week unanimously voted to update its truck route ordinance, which includes the addition of several new roads these vehicles will be allowed to use as they make their way through the city.

Alpharetta's ordinance had not been updated since 1974, and only included Main Street and Ga. 120 as the two roads trucks were allowed to use in the city.

The updated ordinance greatly expands that list, and now includes North and South Main Streets/S.R. 9; S.R. 120/Old Milton Parkway; Haynes Bridge Road from the city limits to S.R. 120; Hembree Road from Westside Parkway to Roswell's city limits; Mansell Road; Maxwell Road from S.R. 9 to Hembree Road; McGinnis Ferry Road; North Point Parkway; Union Hill Road; Westside Parkway; Windward Concourse and Windward Parkway from S.R. 9 to Union Hill Road.

Alpharetta notes that when a destination is not on a designated truck route, drivers must use the "most direct route available" between where they are going and the nearest route.

The ordinance also defines a truck as being a motor vehicle that exceeds 36,000 pounds or has an overall length greater than 30 feet (except vehicles that are designed to carry passengers).

The first reading of the ordinance was approved at the March 26 meeting while the second and final reading was given the green light at the April 9 Council meeting.
