Alpharetta Wants To Add Public Art Around North Point Mall

The city is getting help from the Atlanta Regional Commission to redefine the North Point Retail District.

ALPHARETTA, GA — The Atlanta Regional Commission will provide "critical assistance" to Alpharetta in its efforts to redefine the North Point Retail District to ensure the area's survival in the long-term, the city said Tuesday.

Alpharetta and the ARC will come up with guidelines for the creation of public spaces and the installation of public art in the area around North Point Mall. The city's project was one of 13 chosen for support through the ARC's new Community Development Assistance Program. This initiative will bring ARC staff and groups like the Urban Land Institute, Georgia Power and Georgia Tech into partnership with the local community.

“We were greatly impressed with the diversity of projects submitted. Collaborating with local communities is a key way ARC is helping move the region forward,” said Mike Alexander, director of ARC’s Center for Livable Communities.

The project continues the work begun through Alpharetta’s North Point Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) that was developed over a 6-month period that began in September 2017. That effort actively engaged those who live, work, and play in the city to achieve a future vision for the district that reflects what those most likely to spend time there truly want. The result was a plan designed to achieve a walkable environment where the kinds of experiences residents want are created.

“We are very excited to continue to engage Alpharetta’s citizens to advance the vision they created through the North Point LCI process,” said Alpharetta Community Development Director Kathi Cook. “The assistance we will be getting from the ARC brings to bear resources that would typically cost local taxpayers thousands of dollars that can now be allocated to other needs.”
