MILTON, GA — Milton resident Mark Amick announced his candidacy for Milton City Council. Amick will be running for Post 2 in District 2. Current Councilman, Matt Kunz, announced he would not be seeking re-election this fall.

“I am running for city council because I am committed to protect Milton’s unique character and quality of life,” Amick said. “To me, it is preserving tree tops over growing roof tops.” He continued, “It is what led me to serve on the Board of Directors for the Milton Historical Society. We need to preserve our heritage and charm that is Milton, or it will be lost.”

Milton will be facing many challenges in the coming years stemming from the critical issue of development and growth, he said. Not only does development change how Milton “feels,” but Amick said it also brings a number of other challenges. He said expanding sewer would very likely lead to more development and density – which he said is not what the majority of residents want for the future.

Traffic is another issue. The 2016 voter approved TSPLOST will bring in close to $40 million in traffic relief and infrastructure projects.

“It’s important that we get it right in conjunction with development," Amick said. "New traffic relief projects should continue to preserve the character of Milton while we move traffic through and around the City.”

A top priority for Amick is to ensure residents have a voice in their city’s future. The City of Milton Comprehensive Plan, the City’s guiding plan for growth and development, will be coming up for review.

“It is a priority that we engage the community and enable participation in this process.” Amick said. “Local government works best when residents participate.”

As Milton continues to grow, so do the needs and expectations of residents for city services such as Public Safety and Parks and Rec. The city needs leaders who will make sound fiscal decisions based on resident feedback on how to prioritize and provide those services, he said. One of the challenges which citizens face is the growing need for active or sports fields.

Athletics is a big part of whom the community is in Milton, Amick said.

"High school and youth teams are winning state championships including our 7U Hopewell Mustangs baseball team just won the Dizzy Dean World Series," he said. "We need to consider partnering opportunities, as well as land acquisition, to determine what the best path forward will be to support our families in a way that not only sets them up for athletic success, but the city for financial success in the years ahead."

Amick has held numerous leadership roles in the community, including currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Milton Historical Society and is a Founding Member. He also serves as the HOA president for his subdivision.

He is also a graduate of the 2018 Milton Citizen Government Academy and serves as a volunteer for the Summit Hill Elementary PTO. Amick’s professional career consisted of serving in various leadership roles for Fortune 500 companies, such as Microsoft and Sprint.

Amick and his wife, Amy, live in The Manor with their son, Wyatt. Amick graduated from the University of Kansas and holds an MBA from the University of Missouri.
