Annual Fire Hydrant Flushing Begins In Milton

The annual maintenance initiative is done to clear out minerals and sediments that accumulate in water lines throughout the year.

MILTON, GA — The Milton Fire-Rescue Department will begin conducting its annual fire hydrant flushing program, an initiative designed to remove minerals and sediments that accumulate in water lines throughout the year.

The flushing kicks off in the spring and is done each week until the process is complete. Residents will begin seeing Milton Fire-Rescue teams performing this task while they make their way through all fire hydrants in the city. Along with flushing the lines, the maintenance also allows the city to check and record water pressure to ensure the water system is functioning properly.

During the flushing process, you may observe a fire hydrant with water coming out of the side opening. Additionally, water in one's home may take on an orange or rusty appearance following the flushing of a nearby hydrant. The discoloration is caused by the iron sediment in the water being disturbed by the hydrant flushing, the city said.

If this occurs, you can run your cold water tap for several minutes to clear your lines. The water is still safe to use and drink, the city added. We also recommend flushing your toilets once or twice. The water should run clear within a few minutes.
