Roy, a Bangladesh-born American citizen, was hacked to death Feb. 26 in Dhaka, news reports said. He was ambushed while walking down the street with his wife, Rafida Ahmed Bonna, who was critically injured in the attack while attempting to save her husband.
She suffered several stab wounds and a severed finger and remains hospitalized in serious condition, according to BBC News.
A well known blogger, Roy was known for his vocal opposition to religious extremism. He founded the blog, Mukto-mona, or Free Mind, which focuses on spreading secular opinions in Bangladesh, BBC News said.
BBC News notes Rahman is currently out on bail after he was previously arrested over posts on social media following the 2013 death of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider, who was also vocal about religious extremism.
