Bid Farewell To Old Milton High School On Dec 17

The walk-through at the old school, originally planned for Dec. 9, had to be rescheduled due to last week's winter storm.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The old Milton High School in Alpharetta will open to the public on Sunday, providing the community one last time to take a walk down memory lane before the facility is prepared for demolition to make way for a new STEM-focused high school

Visitors can drop by any time from noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 17 and visit areas inside and outside of the building at 86 School Drive. The event, which was initially scheduled for Dec. 9, had to be rescheduled due to the winter storm.

Yearbooks, pictures of former graduating classes and other Milton memorabilia will be on display, and there will be musical performances by alumni, former faculty and current students. Food trucks also will be on site, making this a fun time for the entire family.

While the event is focused on celebrating the past, information about the new STEM high school will be available in the auditorium.

The original Milton High School on School Drive opened in 1921 with grades one through 11 to serve all students in what was then known as Milton County. In the 1950's, the opening of an elementary school scaled Milton High School back to grades 8-12, followed by a middle school in the 1980's, which gave Milton the traditional high school grade levels of 9-12. The school's oldest surviving section was completed in 1956 and over the years there have been 17 contiguous additions.

In 2005, a replacement Milton High School opened on Birmingham Highway and the original building on School Drive was renamed Milton Center. It currently houses Independence High School, which is relocating to classrooms on the Teaching Museum North campus.

The school system is set to begin construction on the old Milton campus beginning this summer. Scheduled to open in Fall 2020, the school will have college and career-focused curriculum pathways in a 244,000-square-foot school offering programs in Healthcare Science, Engineering, and Information Technology.
