ATLANTA, GA -- State Sen. Brandon Beach has been appointed to serve as chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee.

Along with that appointment, the Republican from Alpharetta was also tapped to serve on several influential committees for the 2017 Legislative Session by the Senate Committee on Assignments.

“Georgia’s network of roads, waterways, bridges, railways and runways are some of our state’s most valuable resources,” said Sen. Beach. “I’m honored Lt. Governor Cagle and my colleagues have entrusted me to chair the Senate Transportation Committee as we begin a new legislative term. Our state’s transportation infrastructure has played a significant role in the success of Georgia’s economy and I look forward to working with my colleagues to pass legislation that will keep Georgia moving in the right direction.”

Once a piece of legislation is introduced in the Senate, it is assigned to a committee, depending on its topic. If the committee gives the legislation a “do pass” recommendation, then the proposed law is sent to the Rules Committee for consideration.

The appointed chairs will oversee the operation and order of Senate committee meetings, including calling for action on bills, resolutions or other matters assigned to that committee.

The first session of the 154th Georgia General Assembly convened Jan. 9 at the Georgia State Capitol.
