Birmingham United Methodist Church

Birmingham United Methodist Church will host a Brain Health &amp; Dementia Symposium on Saturday, April 25, 2026 from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Supported by Beyond Dementia Coalition and the Alzheimer's Association, this event brings together community members, family caregivers, and healthcare professionals for education and meaningful dialogue focused on dementia risk reduction and caregiving support.
The symposium reflects emerging research showing that lifestyle interventions can reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Grounded in findings from the Alzheimer's Association-sponsored POINTER Study, the event emphasizes that brain health matters—and there are steps people can take today to protect their cognition. The symposium is designed for family caregivers, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in learning about brain health and dementia care.
Symposium attendees will:
<ul><li>Learn from Dr. Antoine Trammell, MD, MPH, from Emory Goizueta Brain Health Institute, about memory challenges, diagnostic approaches, treatment advances, and lessons in successful aging</li><li>Take away key information on dementia risk reduction&nbsp;</li><li>Learn about practical dementia caregiving strategies</li><li>Witness brain-healthy cooking demonstrations that showcase practical nutrition approaches</li><li>Participate in activities including Virtual Dementia Tour, therapeutic recreation activities, and canine therapy</li></ul>
Today, older adults are in better health and have lower disability rates than previous generations, yet many will encounter cognitive challenges affecting their physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Alzheimer's disease, the most common type of dementia for older adults, typically first appears after age 60, with risk increasing with age. Early symptoms include mild memory loss and misplacing items, which can progress to difficulty holding conversations, responding to the environment, and carrying out everyday activities. Currently, close to 200,000 people over age 65 are living with dementia in Georgia.
The symposium intentionally integrates brain health-focused speakers alongside traditional dementia presenters, offering attendees a comprehensive understanding of both risk reduction and care strategies.
