Cambridge High School Cancels Sept. 11 Memorial

Due to Hurricane Irma's projected path, the school has called off its plan to display 2,977 American flags on its front lawn.

UPDATE at 5:10 p.m. Sept. 8: this event has been cancelled due to Hurricane Irma's projected path through Georgia.

MILTON, GA -- Cambridge High School will continue an annual tradition of honoring the nearly 3,000 people who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on American soil. The school will host its 9/11 Never Forget Memorial, a display of 2,977 American flags placed on the front lawn of the school to commemorate the event.

Each flag represents a life lost in the tragic 9/11 attacks, and the display "serves as a visual tribute to the victims of 9/11, their families and the Americans who fight to keep our country safe," the city said in an email blast sent on behalf of organizers.

The memorial is organized by Cambridge junior Elizabeth Willis, and she encourages members of the Milton and Alpharetta communities to participate in the project. Volunteers are welcome to stop by Cambridge High School at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9 to help set up the display.

For those who wish to visit the memorial, there will be a remembrance book where visitors may record their memories of 9/11 or make a pledge to perform a good deed on this day each year.

"This is an excellent way for the community to come together as we reflect and pay tribute to the victims. It is our responsibility to honor these Americans and ensure that they will never be forgotten," said Willis. "The project is also a way in which we can commend first-responders, such as firefighters and police officers, who protect us everyday."
