On Aug. 1, Alpharetta Fire Department’s Engine No. 5 and Milton’s Fire Department’s Rescue No. 42 both responded to a drowning call involving a three-year-old child.

The child was pulled from a pool ”in severe medical distress,” and was not breathing, the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said.

Rescue efforts began as the child was placed into an ambulance. The child was transported to a local hospital while those lifesaving efforts continued.

Those efforts paid off, as the child survived following weeks in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. The three-year-old was discharged last week and has made a full recovery from the incident, Alpharetta public safety officials said.

To provide effective and efficient public safety services, the cities of Alpharetta and Milton for years have shared public safety responsibilities and resources in an effort to get help to those in need, regardless of which city responds and municipal boundaries.

Alpharetta Public Safety Director Gary George states “this operational philosophy erases jurisdictional boundaries between our cities.”

“People could care less what is written on the side of a police car or fire engine when an emergency exists,” he added. “They want the nearest help available.”
