Despite Never Working in California, Milton Woman Asked to Pay Back Taxes

The following arrest information was supplied by the Milton Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A Milton woman who told police she has never lived or worked in California now has to convince that state she doesn't owe it almost $1,400 in business franchise back taxes.

The local resident told Milton police on Feb. 6 that she was contacted by the State of California Franchise Tax Board that she owed $1,377 in taxes and penalties from 2010.

The victim learned someone filed a tax return in September 2011 using her identity, but the tax board wouldn't give her any other information.

Milton Store Burglarized Overnight

Someone broke into a store in Milton overnight on Feb. 4-5 and stole a few hundred dollars that had been left in the cash register.

The owner of Madurai Foods, which specializes in catering South Indian homemade meals and food items, reported to Milton police on Feb. 5 that he had secured the store the night before. But when he arrived the next morning, he found a side door had been forced open and cash was missing from the register.

Telling Suspect Police Report Was Made Gets Laptop Back

A Deer Trail resident who recruited some workers to help him move out of his apartment reported to police on Feb. 6 that a computer bag containing a laptop and other computer hardware worth $1,650 was missing.

The victim later called Milton police to say that a half hour after reporting the theft, he called one of the workers, whom he only knew by a first name, to tell him the theft had been reported. Shortly after that, his computer equipment was returned, and he decided not to press charges.
