About Mumbai Indian Bistro
Mumbai Indian Bistro, recently opened in Alpharetta, Georgia, sets itself apart from the many other Indian restaurants in the area with food and service that you can’t find at most other establishments. Founder Edwin D’Souza, who was raised in Mumbai, transports his guests to his home city with a menu of stand-out dishes that represent different cultural cuisines yet are still quintessentially Mumbai in both taste and presentation, ranging from full-service Iranian influenced Parsee Cafes; to Koli fisherfolk kitchens; to food stalls and street vendors at railway stations and beaches.
The top favorite of the mostly Indian clientele is Railway Chicken, a lightly spicy stew of tender chicken pieces and halved hard-boiled eggs, often served on long distance trains in India (hence the name), and evokes tasty memories of train travels back home for many diners. Guests also favor Malvan shrimp, large prawns marinated in a coconut and tamarind-based curry that comes from the coastal areas south of Mumbai, and Gobi Manchurian, a sweet, spicy, crunchy cauliflower entrée that is a fusion of Indian and Chinese flavors (known as Indian Chinese cuisine). Rest assured, you can find familiar dishes, too, like your naans, butter chicken, or chicken tikka masala, as well as a weekday lunch buffet, but ordering those would be like traveling to Mumbai, only to see the Gateway of India and the sterile, air-conditioned shops that cater to foreign tourists. You’d be missing out – a lot.
Mumbai Indian Bistro does differentiate itself from its chaotic city namesake in its choice of modern gray and silver décor. You won’t find brightly colored sarees hanging from the rafters her, only some tasteful prints of Mumbai-based icons, like the aforementioned Gateway of India and a statesman-like portrait of Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan. The effect is calm, clean, crisp, and a refreshing change from the typical overstimulating, eye-popping color surround. The colors also serve as a nice, neutral backdrop for the often vividly colored, artfully presented, made-from-scratch food on your table, so you can focus your senses on that and not your surroundings.
If you think the restaurant’s logo looks vaguely like a train station sign, you are right. It is the station sign of Mumbai’s extensive and complex train system, whose signs resemble older versions of its former British colonial rulers. Mumbai’s trains are the common thread that literally moves and connects the diverse peoples and cultures in this bustling megacity and economic hub of 18.2 million people who come from all different parts of India and Asia. Likewise, if you’re so inclined, Edwin will share stories that will move and connect you with his lifelong passions of his native Mumbai and its food, drawing from his years of white-glove level of care for his guests at Taj Continental, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and Buckhead Life Restaurant Group. Indeed, the Bistro’s attentive and friendly service staff has been notable enough to be mentioned by many Yelp reviewers.
So, all aboard for your next stop at Mumbai Indian Bistro, where a gastronomic and cultural adventure awaits you, sans the crowds and cacophony. You don’t even need a passport.
