Driver's Low Blood Sugar Possibly Caused Accident: Police

The driver of a Maserati reportedly had low blood sugar before crashing into an Audi Tuesday afternoon on Main Street in Alpharetta.

ALPHARETTA, GA — The driver of a vehicle involved a two-car crash Tuesday on Main Street in Alpharetta was suffering from low blood sugar at the time of the collision, according to an accident report obtained by Patch.

Officers were dispatched to the crash around 4:53 p.m. July 17 on Ga. 9/Main Street just north of Pine Grove Drive. According to an accident report released by the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety, a 2016 Audi A6 was traveling northbound on the highway when he saw another vehicle, a 2017 Maserati Ghibli S Q4, approach him from behind a high rate of speed.

The driver of the Audi, a Milton resident, said he noticed the Maserati "had been driving erratically prior to the intersection and appeared to be driving in such a way still," the accident report notes.

"Specifically, he stated veh[icle] 1 was driving all over the roadway and was approaching at a high rate of speed as another car entered the center left-turn lane of GA-9 near 366 N Main St," report adds. The driver of the Audi said he slowed down, and looked for "an avenue to escape" because he wasn't sure how the Maserati was going to maneuver around the car in the center lane and his vehicle.

However, the Maserati crashed into the rear of the Audi, veered to the right, left the highway, struck a mailbox at 333 North Main Street and came to a final rest in the wooded area just east of the road.

The report notes the driver of the Maserati was "experiencing medical complications related to a combination of low blood sugar (measured on scene by AMR EMS services) and having just given blood about an hour prior."

"He was not able to provide a description of events leading up to the collision with vehicle 2," the report adds.

Alpharetta police received multiple 911 calls about the Maserati as it drove northbound on Main Street from the city limits to the crash site, which was about two miles. Throughout the investigation of the accident, the responding officer said another driver approached him and said the Maserati struck his vehicle on Main Street at Mayfield Road.

The driver of the Maserati, a resident of Stone Mountain, was found at-fault in the collision, but was not cited due to medical complications, the report added. He was transported by ambulance to WellStar North Fulton Hospital for "diabetic reasons" while the driver of the Audi reported no injuries.
