Earth Day To Be Celebrated With Fun Family Activities In Milton
A commitment to conservation and sustainable living will be reinforced at an annual Milton event on Saturday, April 20.
MILTON, GA -- The City of Milton has another fun-filled day planned in celebration of Earth Day 2019. All are invited to the Milton City Hall Plaza on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for this free community event.
Kids can build a Home Depot bird feeder and make other fun crafts from recycled materials, and zoologist Jim Nark returns to this year's celebration, bringing amphibians, reptiles, arachnids, insects, and mammals for an entertaining and educational experience for children and adults alike.
"We have a responsibility to take care of our planet," Milton's Conservation Projects Manager Teresa Stickels said in a release. "Milton is committed to finding innovative and interactive approaches to promote environmental education and encourage green living."

In addition to children's activities, there will be live music and green classes will be offered in Community Place, the community building adjacent to City Hall Plaza. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a class on vermiculture - the process of using worms to decompose organic food waste, turning it into a nutrient-rich material capable of supplying necessary nutrients to help sustain plant growth. This process is simple and effective. And, at 1 p.m., there will be a class on creating a wildlife-friendly backyard.
There will also be information available to those interested in certifying their backyard as a National Wildlife Federation wildlife habitat. The North Fulton Master Gardeners are providing demos, and Milton's Disability Awareness Committee (MDAC) will showcase raised planters that demonstrate accessible gardening.

"The raised planters enhance sensory gardening activities for children and adults with disabilities and give joy back to those who are no longer able to garden the traditional way," Tass Welch, MDAC chairperson said in a release.
3:8 Juice and Eatery will be back at Earth Day Milton this year, with tasty and healthy smoothies, bowls and other treats. And, if you've ever wanted a rain barrel, there will be a random drawing to give away two. Additionally, as part of Milton's Earth Day, there will be volunteers throughout the community doing environmental service projects.
"One of the goals of this event is to understand the importance of Earth Day, while putting on a community event that has a lower impact," Stickels said.
