Former Fulton School Board Member Dies

Catherine Maddox served on the board for 10 years before stepping down in 2017 to focus on her health.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Former Fulton County School Board member Catherine Maddox has passed away, the school system confirmed Friday on its Facebook page.

Fulton County School Superintendent Dr. Jeff Rose said Maddox, who resigned from the school board in 2017 to focus on her health, was "genuine, caring person who always put the needs of students and employees first."

"She greatly contributed to our school system, first as a parent and then as an active community member, and then as an elected school board member," he added on the school system's Facebook page. "It was an honor to know and work with her. She truly was a servant of the people and put her heart and soul into Fulton County Schools."

Maddox was first elected to the District 6 post on the board in 2007, representing parts of East Point, College Park and Union City. A former nurse at Grady Memorial Hospital, Maddox was an advocate for Fulton County students and parents for many years. She served as chair of the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee and as legislative chair of the South Fulton Council of PTAs as well as the Fulton County Curriculum Advisory Board, FCS said. She was a member of the Fulton County Schools Discipline Review Committee and the United States Justice Department – Fulton Community School Advisory Committee.

An East Point resident for more than 25 years, Maddox also was a founding member of the Mayor’s Educational Task Force and was a member of the city’s Youth Council Advisory Board and Ethics Board. She was a member of the East Point Business Association, a member of the Concerned Citizens and Clergy of East Point as well as the East Point Historical Society.

Maddox was also active with the Boy Scouts of America, previously serving as membership chair, and was a member of Blessed Life AOH Church and the Concerned Black Clergy of Atlanta. In 2002, the American Legion presented her with the Ella Pierson Shining Star Award for her community work. She also was a member of the National NAACP and attended Atlanta Technical College and Georgia Military College.

Maddox leaves behind her husband Robert, a son Chad, who worked at Parklane Elementary School, a daughter Tiffany, and several grandchildren. No funeral details have been announced at this time.
