The District 1 seat includes portions of Roswell and Alpharetta.

Following Schultz’s resignation, the school board solicited letters of interest and resumes from potential candidates. The board chose Stuart as the finalist who will serve out the remainder of Schultz’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2016.

“I’ve been asked many times why I am involved at a ‘big picture’ level, and my answer is simple: I feel strongly that if we raise one child up, we raise the level of all children, our schools, our communities, and society in general,” Stuart said in her letter of interest for the position. “All children deserve nothing less than our providing them the tools to succeed and become educated, happy, productive members of society.”

A 20-year resident of District 1 and a parent of two teenagers, Stuart has been involved in Fulton County Schools activities since her children first started kindergarten at Mountain Park Elementary.

Over the years she has served in various PTA and School Governance Council (formerly Local School Advisory Council) roles at Mountain Park Elementary School, Crabapple Middle School and Roswell High School. She also has been a part of the Superintendent’s Community Advisory Committee since 2009 and has been a parent advocate for supporting SPLOST funding. At the local and state PTA level, she has served as a vice president of programs for the North Fulton Council PTA and as a committee member for the Georgia PTA.

“Katha Stuart is well known and well respected in the District 1 community,” said School Board President Linda McCain. “We are excited about her experience and the new perspectives she will bring to our governance work.”

Stuart holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Georgia State University. She is currently employed as an independent marketing consultant and has previous roles as a regional vice president for both Berger Funds and INVESCO Funds Group. She and her husband, John, live in Roswell with their two daughters who are in their sophomore and senior years at Roswell High School.
