Fulton Schools To Host Forum On Youth Mental Health

Participants will learn how to recognize the signs of mental health conditions and how to partner with schools to address concerns.

From Fulton Schools: The Fulton County Schools’ South/Central Wellness Collaborative is hosting a community forum to increase awareness of the mental health needs of youth. Parents and teens are invited to, “When Love is Not Enough: Know When to Seek Help,” an in-depth conversation about mental health concerns families may face. The event will take place on Saturday, March 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at Tri-Cities High School, 2575 Harris Street in East Point.

Participants will learn how to recognize the signs of mental health conditions and how to partner with schools and community agencies to address concerns. Panelists include Dr. Sherry Blake (Ask Dr. Sherry); Dr. Sultan Simms of WellCare, Inc.; Dr. Veda Johnson of Emory University School of Medicine; LaTrina Foster with the Fulton County Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities; and Candace Ford with Fulton County Schools’ Counseling, Psychological and Social Work Services.

Statistics show one in five children in the U.S. show signs or symptoms of a mental health disorder in a given year. Nearly 80% of children who need mental health services do not receive the help they need. In most cases, parents and caregivers are often not aware of how to help a child who is struggling with a mental illness.

During the forum, community health vendors will be on site, including the Kaiser Permanente Mobile Health Van. The event is free but participants are asked to register here.
