Latter-Day Saints To Build Church Near Alpharetta

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host a groundbreaking ceremony Sept. 8 for its church in south Forsyth County.

ALPHARETTA, GA — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will break ground on a new facility next month in south Forsyth County. The groundbreaking ceremony is planned for 9 a.m. Sept. 8 on Union Hill Road at Windward Concourse.

The church, which said accommodate its growth of membership in North Georgia, notes the project will be built by McMichael Construction. The facility, including a chapel, will be more than 18,000 square feet, and will seat between 200 and 300 people.

"We are excited and thankful for the unprecedented growth of the Church in this area. Many individuals and families have made the Alpharetta area their home, and this new building is a great blessing and opportunity for all," said local Bishop Brom Stevens. "We anticipate this growth to continue, and we thank our local leaders for their support as we expand. It’s thrilling to be a part of this special moment, and we invite all to come join us."

As the fourth largest denomination in the United States, the Latter-day Saints worldwide build about one church building per day. Called meeting houses, the structures contain a chapel for Christian religious services on Sundays, but are utilized in many ways throughout the week. The building will contain classrooms, offices, a small church library, a kitchen and a cultural hall with an indoor basketball court that can additionally be used for musical productions.

The location will also be home to one of the over 5,000 Family History Centers, which the group makes available free of charge to the public for the purpose of genealogical research. With more than 16 million members worldwide constituting over 30,000 congregations, according to the Church, the buildings can also be used as launching areas for community service initiatives in times of natural disasters, such as in the recent flooding in Houston. Often the efforts are in conjunction with those of other community and faith-based groups.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints welcome all to attend their Sunday worship services regardless of membership. The public is also welcome to attend the Sept. 8 ceremony.
